If you live in the UK, how are your taxes spent?
Compiling data available from official sources such as the ONS, DirectGov and local councils, this Open Knowledge Foundation website allows people living in the UK to see a breakdown of how taxes are spent daily.
Given how much people like to use tax as a justification for prejudice, particularly against the unemployed, the statistic here should come as something of a surprise. At my current salary of £15000 per year only £0.14 per day is spent on supporting people out of work. That’s nearly six times less than the £0.84 spent on the military, or half the amount spent just on “top level government”. I know which I’d rather support.
